The
overall networking objective of EUR-OCEANS is to achieve lasting
integration of European research organisations on global change and
pelagic marine ecosystems and the relevant scientific disciplines. This
will put Europe in an international leadership position in this field.
(i) Present situation. The 160 EUR-OCEANS PIs are scattered in 69
Member Organisations, located in 25 countries. The PIs belong to three
research communities, which have traditionally often worked
independently on: pelagic ecosystems, biogeochemistry and ecosystem
approach to marine resources.
(ii) Initial integration. EUR-OCEANS will bring together research
organisations and excellent researchers, through the Joint Programme of
Activities of the 4-year EUR-OCEANS Network.

EUR-OCEANS and the forthcoming European Institute are in line
with European priorities stated during the World Summit on Sustainable
Development (Johannesburg, 2002), e.g. "climate change and the loss of
biodiversity are identified as main threats to sustainable development"
(EU strategy for sustainable development), and "sustainable management
of natural and environmental resources are the 3rd priority objective"
(Towards a global partnership for sustainable development).
