We come today with another "special issue" on ... Jurassic ammonites. It consits of a memoir and an article, both in French (but title, abstract, figure and plate captions are also available in English). We should come soon with some sedimentology or stratigraphy papers (for a change ;).
Nous vous proposons aujourd'hui un "volume spécial" sur des ammonites du Jurassique. Il s'agit d'un mémoire et d'un article. Nous devrions publier prochainement des papiers de sédimentologie ou de stratigraphie (pour changer ;)

(2009).- Subfamily Taramelliceratinae (Ammonitina, Haploceratoidea, Oppeliidae) from Middle and Upper Oxfordian strata (Plicatilis Zone, Vertebrale Subzone - Bimammatum Zone, Berrense Subzone) of N Vienne, France (submediterranean province).- Carnets de Géologie - Notebooks on Geology, Brest, Mémoire 2009/02 (CG2009_M02), 101 p., 4 figs., 1 tabl., 27 pls.

Abstract: In the area of northern Poitou studied Taramelliceratinae are present at every level except in the Schilli Subzone, itself possibly absent, and the Stenocycloides Subzone in which only Perisphinctidae and Trimarginites sp. occur. Although some species are known and cited in the literature often, they are figured infrequently or not at all: Taramelliceras (Taramelliceras) dentostriatum (Quenstedt), T. (T.) callicerum (Oppel), T. (Proscaphites) anar (Oppel). Here, the ranges of these species in the stratigraphic succession were determined through their association with other faunas in the same collections, using the presence or absence of known precise stratigraphic markers (for example: Neomorphoceras chapuisi (Oppel) = Transversarium Zone, Luciaeformis Subzone; Taramelliceras (? Taramelliceras) colleti (Lee) = Rotoides Subzone; "Epipeltoceras semimammatum" (Quenstedt) = Bimammatum Zone, "Berrense" Subzone, Semimammatum horizon) and/or the disappearance of species with longer ranges (for example: the disappearance of Neoprionoceras lautlingensis (Rollier) which is present in the Parandieri Subzone, but absent in the overlying Luciaeformis Subzone). The ranges of certain species that had been incorrectly located stratigraphically : T. (T.) dentostriatum (Quenstedt), T. (T.) callicerum (Oppel), T. (T.) externnodosum Dorn, have been restored to their true location as determined from their occurrences in the author's collections and in those of other collectors who had noted their stratigraphic relationships to other taxa. Résumé : Dans la région étudiée du Nord du Poitou, la Sous-Famille des Taramelliceratinae est présente dans tous les niveaux stratigraphiques, hormis la Sous-Zone à Schilli (très peu représentée) et la Sous-Zone à Stenocycloides dont la faune est constituée uniquement de Perisphinctidae et de Trimarginites sp. Bien que certaines d'espèces soient connues et citées en littérature, elles sont souvent mal interprétées : Taramelliceras (Taramelliceras) dentostriatum (Quenstedt), T. (T.) callicerum (Oppel), T. (Proscaphites) anar (Oppel). La localisation stratigraphique des différentes espèces a été faite par l'association d'autres faunes de même récoltes, et par la présence (ou l'absence) de marqueurs stratigraphiques précis reconnus: par exemple, Neomorphoceras chapuisi (Oppel) = Zone à Transversarium, Sous-Zone à Luciaeformis ; Taramelliceras (? Taramelliceras) colleti (Lee) = Zone à Transversarium, Sous-Zone à Rotoides ; "Epipeltoceras semimammatum" (Quenstedt) = Zone à Bimammatum, Sous-Zone à "Berrense", horizon à Semimammatum ; la disparition de Neoprionoceras lautlingensis (Rollier) présent dans la Sous-Zone à Parandieri, mais absent dans celle à Luciaeformis. D'autres qui ont été incorrectement positionnées stratigraphiquement: T. (T.) dentostriatum (Quenstedt), T. (T.) callicerum (Oppel), T. (T.) externnodosum Dorn, ont été restaurées à leur emplacement exact, déterminé à partir des collectes de l'auteur et de celles d'autres collectionneurs qui avaient pris note de leurs relation stratigraphiques avec d'autres espèces. (2009).- The ammonite fauna of the 'marls with ferruginous fossils' from the Niort region, France (Lower Oxfordian, Cordatum Zone, Cordatum Subzone).- Carnets de Géologie - Notebooks on Geology, Brest, Article 2009/05 (CG2009_A05), 21 p., 1 fig., 8 pls.

Abstract: A new collection of ammonites from the 'marls with ferruginous ammonites' in the Niort region (France), previously studied by Grossouvre (1922), provides a large amount of biostratigraphic, paeleoenvironmental and paleogeographic information. The fauna is dated Lower Oxfordian: Cordatum Zone, Cordatum Subzone, probably the lower part of it. In addition, it is unique in western Europe owing to: 1) the species found of which some appear to be known only in this deposit 2) by the extremely atypical domination of the couple Taramelliceras - Creniceras which represent 2/3 of the specimens. Furthermore, the aspect of the fauna strongly suggests that the habitat was a distal platform unknown in other European strata of the same age. Résumé : Une nouvelle récolte d'ammonites dans les marnes à ammonites ferrugineuses de la région de Niort (France), autrefois étudiées par de Grossouvre (1922), apporte de très nombreuses informations biostratigraphiques, paléoenvironnementales et paléobiogéographiques. La faune est datée de l'Oxfordien inférieur : Zone à Cordatum, Sous-Zone à Cordatum, partie inférieure probable. De plus, elle est unique en Europe occidentale 1) par les espèces trouvées -dont certaines ne semblent connues que dans ce gisement- 2) par la domination très atypique du binôme Taramelliceras - Creniceras qui représente les 2/3 des individus. Enfin, le spectre faunique plaide en faveur d'un milieu de plate-forme distale inconnu dans les autres gisements européens de même âge. Une figuration détaillée des différentes espèces est donnée, parfois accompagnée d'une nouvelle interprétation taxonomique.

Next week (6th-12th September) I will attend the 8th International Symposium on the Cretaceous held at Plymouth University. May be I'll meet you there (look for the tallest geologist, that should be me ;)
