Scientific papers

Joannea publishes original contributions dealing with all aspects of the earth sciences concerning the federal state of Styria (Austria). Papers are in German or English. Basically there is no limitation on their length. Outsized enclosures and figures in colour are accepted when necessary. After acceptance by the editor manuscripts are sent to two reviewers proposed by the author. Revised papers (hard copy and files) must be returned to the editor within two weeks. Authors are responsible for the contents of their contributions.

Short communications

Notes up to three pages in lenght are accepted. They are subject to review only by the editor.

Manuscripts

Manuscripts must be submitted electronically (MS Word for Windows or Rich Text Format) and also in two hard copies. For manuscripts in German the new spelling is required. For manuscripts in English (only English spelling accepted) proof-reading should be done by a person mentioned in the acknowledgments.

Structure: Title, Subtitles (optional), Author, abstract, key words (all in German and English). Five levels of headers (e. g. 1., 1.1., 1.1.1.) are accepted and unnumbered subheads are possible. Results and conclusions should be discussed at the end. Acknowledgments and references are unnumbered. Authors address (title, first name, surname, institution, address, e-mail) must be specified.

Layout: The text must be formatted: left-justified, double-spaced, without make-up and hyphenation. Footnotes, underlinings and capitals should be avoided. Use only bold, italics and small capitals for formatting. All special characters must be marked red in the files and print-outs. Names of genera and species must be italicized, surnames of authors must be in small capitals.
Explanations for figures, tables and plates (in German and English) must be placed in the position desired and cross references in the text must in red in both the file and on the hard copy. References in the text: AUTHOR (1999a) or AUTHOR & AUTHOR (2000: 25) or (AUTHOR et al. 1998: 14; AUTHOR 1999b: 345; AUTHOR & AUTHOR 2000: 55). If page numbers are given, they must be in sequence throughout the text. References are arranged in order of their year of publication.
List of references: All publications cited in the text must be listed in alphabetical order. There is no space between initials of authors. Titles of journal must be given in full. Page and volume numbers must not be abbreviated. If illustrations are cited, they must be listed in sequence.

Figures and tables: They must be numbered individually according to their order in the text. The maximum size is 116 x 178 mm. Plates at this maximum size must allow space for labelling at the top (centre). Photographs must be sharp, full of contrast and printed on glossy paper. Line drawings must be prepared with ink on a white background and include a scale bar. Digital photographs and figures must be placed correctly in the print area and must be stored at a resolution of 300 dpi final size. CorelDraw/Photopaint and Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop files are preferred. Pixel files can be stored as TIFF-, vector graphics in the EPS-format. Figures and tables must be submitted separately from the text as discrete files and high-quality print-outs. Please specify the programs used in their preparation.

Reprints: 50 reprints per contribution are free of charge. Additional reprints can be ordered at cost from the editor before publication.
