6th Regional Symposium of the IFAA (July 1-5, 2009, Milano,Italy)
Following a consolidate tradition of our symposia, the scientific topics cover any aspects of calcareous algae and microbialites, including their present-day distribution and abundance. In addition, we are inviting to present your contribution to a cross-cut topic with strong implications in biology, palaeontology, sedimentology, geology and climatology: the quantification (in space or time, at any scale) of the carbonate production of calcareous algae. Although calcareous algae commonly occur both in the present-day shelf environments at all latitudes and in the fossil record, we still need a tentative quantification of their abundance, in space and time. Calcareous algae are sensitive to the expected consequences of global change, therefore our contribution will be particularly important to a wide scientific community, not only to algae specialists. Therefore, especially welcome are contributions aimed at the identification/delimitation of marine habitats dominated by calcareous algae, also by geophysical survey, and all approaches to the quantification of living/fossil calcareous algae in different environmental/paleoenvironmental settings. Post-doctoral Fellowship, Bushveld Intelligence Centre, Department of Geology, University of Pretoria
To start in 2008, for a renewable one year contract (maximum is two years). Annual Fellowship is R100,000-00 (normally non-taxable), single return airfare from overseas (where relevant), plus field expenses.
The project is to carry out a holistic study of the tectonic and structural setting of the Bushveld Complex, within a framework of Transvaal and Waterberg Basins geodynamic development. Key topics to be addressed are given below (# s 4 to 6, particularly):
(1) To critically assess existing work on basin analysis of the Transvaal basin, and to fill in the gaps in the western part of that preservational basin, and in its adjacent eastern-Botswana portion;
(2) to carry out a basin analysis of the central Main Waterberg Basin, to complement more geographically limited extant studies along its southern and NE margins, and in the smaller Middelberg Basin;
(3) to fully examine, in detail the nature and history of the deposits of the Loskop, Glentig and Rust de Winter Formations (traditionally regarded as uppermost Transvaal units, but clearly syn-Bushveld molasse deposits, from the preliminary work of Jacques Martini [1998. The Loskop Formation and its relationship to the Bushveld Complex, South Africa, J. Afr. Earth Sci., 27/2, 193-222] on certain Loskop outcrops) in order to better understand spatial and chronological relations between the three suites of the Bushveld, the Rooiberg volcanics and these essentially syn-Bushveld Loskop sedimentary and lesser volcanic deposits. The structural effects of Bushveld mafic activity can be read, to a certain extent, from the nature and variability of these pan-Loskop deposits.
(4) To collate existing and collect new structural data on the Bushveld Complex (also relevant geophysical data) to build a regional data set.
(5) Most importantly, to link the evolution of the Bushveld Complex to the gedynamic history of its enclosing Transvaal and Waterberg Basins, and to existing cratonic architecture, and to post-Bushveld tectonic events.
(6) To establish the regional metamorphic history related to Bushveld intrusion and to integrate this with the above studies.

The sauropod dinosaur Cetiosaurus Owen in the Bathonian (Middle Jurassic) of the Ardennes (NE France): insular, but not dwarf
Eric Buffetaut, Bernard Gibout, Isabelle Launois & Claude Delacroix.- A chevron bone from an Early Bathonian oolitic limestone in the Ardennes (NE France) is referred to the sauropod dinosaur Cetiosaurus Owen, previously known from the Middle Jurassic of England, on the basis of its rod-like distal end. This is the first well attested occurrence of Cetiosaurus in France. The presence of Cetiosaurus remains in the Bathonian of both Oxfordshire and the Ardennes is explainable by the fact that these regions were situated on the margin of the London-Brabant Massif land area, on which sauropod populations apparently lived. Contrary to the condition in other sauropods in insular environments, there is no evidence of dwarfism in Cetiosaurus from the London-Brabant Massif, probably because this emergent area was connected to the much larger Fenno-Scandian Shield.- SRef-ID: http://overview.sref.org/1634-0744/CG2011_L06.- Handle-ID: http://hdl.handle.net/2042/43897

Evolution of a dense outer protective tube layer in serpulids (Polychaeta, Annelida)
Olev Vinn & Elena K. Kupriyanova.- Although the walls of most serpulid tubes are homogeneous, tubes of certain species may contain up to four ultrastructurally distinct layers. Some of these layers are made of densely packed large crystals and others are composed of sparsely packed fine crystals. In almost all (16 of 17) examined species having layered tubes, the dense layer is located in the outer wall part and the layer(s) composed of fine and relatively sparsely packed crystals are positioned in the inner wall part. Two species have transparent tube walls made entirely of densely packed crystals. Fossil serpulid tubes with dense outer layers (DOL) are known from the Late Cretaceous (Pentaditrupa subtorquata) and the Eocene (Pyrgopolon cf. mellevillei and Rotularia spirulaea). DOL gives a characteristic smooth shiny appearance to the tube surface and presumably evolved as an adaptation against drilling predation by gastropods and to delay shell dissolution in the waters of the deep-sea under-saturated with calcium carbonate.- SRef-ID: http://overview.sref.org/1634-0744/CG2011_L05.- Handle-ID: http://hdl.handle.net/2042/43896

Aptian ammonites of Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates)
Robert Busnardo & Bruno R.C. Granier.- The identification of some twenty ammonite fragments from oil wells drilled in offshore Abu Dhabi revealed the presence of six Aptian genera: Cheloniceras, Epicheloniceras, Gargasiceras, Colombiceras, Pseudohaploceras, and Macroscaphites. These ammonites indicate the Furcata Zone and the succeeding Martini Zone. The Gargasian age of the upper part (HST) of the Shu'aiba as well as that of the whole of the Bab are thus firmly established.- SRef-ID: http://overview.sref.org/1634-0744/CG2011_L04.- Handle-ID: http://hdl.handle.net/2042/43895

Source and evolution of the clinopyroxenes in the Loire and Seine basins (France) based on grain morphology and color
Robert Étienne & Jean-Pierre Larue.- Variation in the characteristics (color, morphology) of clinopyroxene grains (CPX) in alluvial deposits and other surficial formations in the Loire valley, the Gâtinais and the Beauce show that many are pristine and come directly from recent volcanic eruptions, whereas weathered grains, clearly reworked, come from erosion of Cenozoic and Pleistocene volcanic rocks of the French Massif Central. After deposition, the CPX have been increasingly altered by longer exposures. Weathering of brown CPX yields paler minerals which are greenish-brown, colourless or two-coloured. Similarly, the CPX found in the Seine basin are from recent volcanic ash or old Sologne deposits, and not from Loire alluvial deposits, so that a Pleistocene palaeo-Loire-Seine river is improbable.- SRef-ID: http://overview.sref.org/1634-0744/CG2011_L03.- Handle-ID: http://hdl.handle.net/2042/43894

Catalogue of the Eocene mammal types of the Natural History Museum Basel
Loïc Costeur & Martin Schneider.- This catalogue presents a list of the Eocene mammalian type specimens held in the collection of the Natural History Museum Basel (Naturhistorisches Museum Basel, hereafter NMB). After a close inspection of the very rich Eocene collection (several tens of thousands of specimens), a total of 51 valid holotypes (plus 16 invalid species) were identified together with 21 valid lectotypes and several hundreds paratypes, paralectotypes and syntypes. These types belong to 123 originally described species, of which 99 are still valid, 30 having been moved to another genus.- SRef-ID: http://overview.sref.org/1634-0744/CG2011_B03.- Handle-ID: http://hdl.handle.net/2042/43898
