WP3: Management of content for the DIGITENS resource
This Work Package is related to the DIGITENS encyclopedia: the necessary monitoring of the research for the encyclopaedia entries, the editing of the entries, the management of responsibilities involved before publishing the data online.
The key challenge of the digital encyclopaedia lies in the construction of a cartography of knowledge in relation to the central research domain of the DIGITENS project on European Sociability from the information entered by the authors for all the themes and the documents illustrating them. The dynamic history of sociability, which is also based on a philosophical system, requires a description of notions, categories, forms, objects, phenomena and socio-historical facts that, once identified, will become visible, and highlight the role of individuals as actors of sociability. The project team will compile an anthology of primary sources (including manuscripts and printed material: political, scientific, philosophical texts, treatises of politeness, newspapers and magazines, travel narratives, correspondences, literary and iconographic works) from materials held by the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the National Archives, McGill University, the Musée Cognacq-Jay as well as existing resources included in databases such as Eighteenth-Century Collections Online (ECCO), Early English Books Online (EEBO) and Electronic Enlightenment, to accompany the entries on the DIGITENS website through web-links. This will create an innovative and unique picture of the long eighteenth-century sociability, overcoming cultural barriers and bringing together scholarship from different disciplinary and national traditions.
