-Antoine LILTI (EHESS) : « De la sociabilité à la célébrité : l’espace public des Lumières »
Les travaux sur l’espace public au XVIIIe siècle ont beaucoup insisté sur les pratiques de sociabilité : salons, académies, réseaux de correspondance. L’espace public était ainsi perçu comme la continuation de la République des lettres. Nous pouvons désormais en avoir une vision différente. La grande transformation du XVIIIe siècle est liée à la "révolution médiatique" marquée par le développement rapide de la culture de l’imprimé, la multiplication des journaux et la circulation des images. Ces mutations ont des racines qui remontent au XVIe siècle mais prennent une forme nouvelle au cours du XVIIIe siècle. La culture de la célébrité en est un des traits les plus notables. Nous aborderons quelques uns de ses aspects et la façon dont elle a modifié les pratiques de sociabilité traditionnelle.
-Brian COWAN (McGill University): “Histories of Fame and Celebrity in Early Modern Perspective” Conférence en anglais
The history of fame and the history of celebrity are related, but distinct, fields of inquiry. The history of celebrity as a particularly modern form of fame has become the focus of many new studies that seek to locate its emergence at various points in the later eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. I argue that celebrity formation is best understood as an aspect of a longer-term history of fame and publicity that developed slowly over the course of the early modern era. The emergence of print culture and the commercial theatre, and of publics for them, in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries provided the basis for the making of modern celebrity in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Celebrity is therefore better understood not as a radical rupture in the longue durée history of fame, but as a product of long-term transformations in the history of public and private identities.

Antoine Lilti est directeur d’études à l’EHESS. Il a publié Le Monde des salons, sociabilité et mondanité à Paris au XVIIIe siècle, Fayard, 2005 ; Figures publiques. L’invention de la célébrité (1750-1850), Fayard, 2014, et L’Héritage des Lumières. Ambivalences de la modernité, EHESS/Gallimard/Seuil, 2019.
Brian Cowan est professeur associé d’histoire à l’université de McGill, Canada. Spécialiste de la première modernité britannique et européenne, il est l’auteur de The Social Life of Coffee: The Emergence of the British Coffeehouse, Yale University Press, 2005 ; il a dirigé la publication de The State Trial of Doctor Henry Sacheverell, Wiley-Blackwell, 2012 ; il a participé à l’écriture multigraphe de l’ouvrage collectif Interacting with Print: Elements of Reading in the Era of Print Saturation, University of Chicago Press, 2018. Il prépare actuellement la publication de l’un des volumes de The Cultural History of Fame (Bloomsbury Academic), consacré à l’époque des Lumières.

Thinking about letter-writing, epistolary friendships and models of sociability in eighteenth-century Europe
We will think about how epistolary networks in the eighteenth-century shaped an idea of friendship or intimacy and how personal and intimate letters reflected (new) models of enlightenment sociability. We will also discuss what political, social, religious or economic challenges affected letter-writing in the long eighteenth-century, disrupting channels of distribution, friendships or family circles.
