Journée d'étude des M2 TILE
3 March 2023
Call for Papers
Organised by the students of M2 TILE
Faculté des Lettres et Sciences Humaines Victor Segalen
University of Western Brittany (UBO), Brest
The students of M2 Research TILE are organising a seminar which aims at re-thinking and re-considering the notion of CONTACT(S). Contact is often viewed as a primarily physical experience. Aristotle distinguishes touch from the other senses because of the direct interaction between the body and the object. Touch is the first sense to develop in humans, and nonverbal – or haptic – communication one of the ways in which (human and non-human) communities interact. Since the 15th and 16th centuries, the continuous explorations and discoveries have led to intercultural exchanges across borders, enabling diverse forms of wanted and unwanted contacts, be they economic, military, religious, linguistic and artistic, even leading to war, colonisation and cultural appropriation.
The protean notion of contact will also be approached via that of the media, from letters to the circulation of books and art, the development of the mass media and the rapid spread of the Internet in the 1990s and early 2000s. We welcome proposals that tackle the shift from material to virtual means of exchanging ideas across space, time and form, as well as the impact of health crises, Covid-19 and social distancing on our sociabilities.
We invite post-graduate and doctoral students to submit proposals discussing (but not restricted to):
● Physical / virtual contacts
● Willing / accidental / forced contacts
● Refusing / seeking / initiating contact
● Emotional / spiritual contacts
● Contacts in the private / public sphere
● Contact and the in-between
● Cultural / aesthetic / visual contacts
● Effects of contact
● Contact between ethnic groups, genders and generations
Please submit your proposal in English (no longer than 150-200 words for a 10-to-15 minute presentation) to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Deadline for proposals: January 20, 2023. Participants will receive acceptance notifications by January 31, 2023.
We look forward to receiving your proposals and to meeting you in Brest.
