Over 1,500 strains of bacteria and archaea
The Marine Collection host and distributes microorganisms isolated from various substrates and extreme marine environments.
They are mainly derived from research projects conducted by the BEEP (Biology and Ecology of Deep Marine Ecosystems) joint research unit.
Origins of Biological Resources hosted within the UBOCC Marine CollectioN
Some examples of substrates
Hydrothermal vents (83%): fluids, chimneys, associated fauna, etc.
Continental margins (10%): cold fluid emission zones, lakes, etc.
Subsurface biosphere (6%)
Biological resources hosted within the UBOCC Marine Collection.
Mésophilic (75%) : bacteria only
Thermophilic (25%), including
Aérobic (25%) et Anaérobic (75%)
Archaea (72%) et Bacteria (28%)
What sets us apart from other collections of “validated strains” is that we have several isolates whose phylogenetic position is relatively well known but which have not been fully characterized physiologically.
At the same time, we are working to improve our knowledge of the strains already in our collection in order to increase or sustain our partnerships with industry.
The marine collection provides a large number of isolates that enable our industrial partners to research:
Thermostable molecules
Exopolysaccharides
Bioactive metabolites
