Exploring sediment valorisation at the Port of Cork

The Port of Cork currently disposes of dredged sediments at sea. Land-based management for beneficial reuse has not yet been implemented due to the large volumes of sediments dredged every three years and the limited availability of land. However, the Port of Cork is interested in exploring opportunities to valorise its sediments in the future.

Through the SED’UP project, the Port of Cork expects to identify the most suitable reuse solutions for its sediment types and to gain a clearer understanding of the technical, environmental, and regulatory challenges associated with sediment valorisation. They also expect the project to facilitate exchanges of best practices, provide practical guidelines, and enable discussions with relevant stakeholders involved in sediment reuse. In addition, the Port of Cork aims to improve its understanding of the potential reuse of maintenance and capital dredged materials for future planned reclamation works.
