Morlaix Communauté, a local authority long engaged in sediment reuse initiatives
In 2024, Morlaix Communauté launched a Call for Expressions of Interest (AMI) to stimulate and test innovative solutions for the beneficial reuse of dredged sediments in spatial planning and construction, mobilising stakeholders from across the local area. This initiative supported several pilot actions, including the production of low-energy unfired mud bricks, characterisation tests to assess the potential use of sediments in concrete, and the development of design objects made from marine sediments by Gwilen, an associated partner of the SED’UP project.
In parallel, Morlaix Communauté also tested an additional reuse pathway: the use of dredged sediments for embankment construction. This option is particularly relevant in the local context, where approximately eight kilometres of embankments are rebuilt each year, potentially allowing the reuse of the equivalent of a full dredging cycle. Experiments carried out within this framework delivered conclusive and encouraging results.
Next step - structuring a value chain
- remove barriers (for a regulatory, technical, administrative clarity)
- Scale what works (replicate and operationalise proven pilots)
- Keep innovating (test new reuse pathways at local scale)
