Benefits of transdisciplinary collaborative research

As evidenced by the numerous works produced by the Noz Breizh chair over the past three years, night studies encompass all territories and a growing number of academic disciplines, which must dialogue and, ideally, coordinate their findings in order to inform public policies.

To explore such dialogues and the potential for improving and intertwining methodologies and analytical frameworks, the Noz Breizh chair has not only involved more than a hundred direct contributors (researchers, research engineers, doctoral students and postdocs, associates and partners, interns, student working groups...), it has also actively gathered the opinions and experiences of hundreds of users and residents in the Brest metropolitan area, in Morbihan, and even in Mexico.

Thanks to the efforts of its members, the chair has also been able to participate in about 150 meetings, events, seminars, festivals, workshops, etc., thereby continually expanding the circle of academic and professional partners aware of the dynamics of nightlife and its many dimensions—not to mention the educational efforts carried out for the general public in connection with all these initiatives.

The conclusion of the chair allows us to reflect on the progress made since 2022, providing an opportunity to review all the communication methodologies, mediation, and co-creation that have been deployed, tested, and prototyped. This will serve as a prelude to a guide for collaborative and participatory actions to be encouraged in order to improve the use of artificial light, balancing the need for energy savings with the need for safety at night through lighting.

Reflecting these efforts, the chair’s projects have not only resulted in numerous posters, reviews, and scientific reports (published or forthcoming), but also led to more than sixty publications from press and media outlets—either generalist or specialized, and at the local, regional, and national levels—thereby extending our outreach efforts and demonstrating a growing interest in night studies.
